If you are in the flesh you are going to speak like you are. There is no way around it. Your words reveal the true condition of your heart. Luke 6:45 states it perfectly: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart[a] brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Take ownership of your mouth today and make it a well of life for those around you. (Proverbs 10:11) Not a well of perverse language and slang euphemisms that appease your angry whims. Use reticence (James 1:19) and let the Spirit guide you into prayer over those things that concern you. You can do it. God can release you from the critical spirit that reigns in you so that you might see people as Christ sees them. (Ephesians 4:32) This vision changes the way you speak and edifies those who hear your words instead of burdening them. Wouldn’t you rather impart grace to those who God has entrusted in your circle of influence instead of condemnation to those your words have claimed to hate.
Nothing reveals the fruit of a man or woman like the words they speak, tweet, post on Facebook, say about leadership, post about politicians, share about those who are in authority whether christian or non-christian. Our first course of action should be to pray. Intercede and give thanks for them according to 1 Timothy 2:1-2: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty”. Is this the steps you are taking in your home or on your social media feeds?
We can say we are people who LOVE but our words reveal whether God reigns in us or not. If God is love, would we say what we say, with the heart we say it, the derogatory way we do?
Proverbs 18:21 says that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”. You will not be able to escape the realities of the identifying mark that it places on your heart when your words are those that don’t bring life. At the end of the day we should ask ourselves this question… Did what I say or post bring life or death? The good news is our tongues can bring good things as well as bad. Lets take a look at some of those now.
Tongues bring peace
Matthew 5:9 (NKJV)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Tongues give life
Proverbs 15:4 (NKJV)
4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Tongues promotes health or stabs
Proverbs 12:18 (NKJV)
18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.
Take inventory of your tongue today. Are the words you spew from your platform bringing life or death? The words you use reveal the condition of your heart?
