1 Kings 18:24
24 “Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”
It is great that God answers our requests with fire but what do you do when you really need rain instead? In this text, Elijah tells the people that God is going to show up and prove himself after 3 years of drought. It’s awesome because God does what he does best. He shows up. Just not in the way they expected.
If you know that it hasn’t rained in over 3 years, and then you hear that God is going to show up, wouldn’t you think He would send rain? I would.
How many times have you been praying for God to send rain in your life, but He turns up the heat instead?
You’re praying for God to provide…but your bank keeps loosing your money.
You’re praying for God to help your children to stop smarting off…but it just seems like your kids mouth just keeps getting smarter and smarter.
You’re praying for God to heal your marriage…yet your husband/wife seems to be getting colder and more disconnected each day.
You find yourself questioning God’s intentions when He continues to bring the fire into your already scorching situation. However be comforted by the fact that God eventually did send the rain to the Israelite people. First He needed to reveal His glory through the fire.
God so often answers our prayers with fire before He sends the rain. The question we find ourselves asking in moments like these is. WHY? I believe it is because fire burns down our altars of idolatry, and the false securities we tend to trust in.
All we are left with is our hope in Him. When the smoke dissipates, and the rain starts to fall, there is no doubt of who it was that delivered. Only God could bring rain from fire.
