Noah Or Not

More people will be led to God through the movie Noah, and by it’s atheist director, than all those writers who have spent the last several months composing hateful blogs combined. Do we actually believe that the Lord can’t make good on this loosely depicted story of Noah and his God? I think not.

It could just be that this director, a self-proclaimed atheist, will do more good for the kingdom through this single film than most Christians could hope to accomplish in an entire life time. Remember, if Christians get busy being in-effective for the kingdom, God will use the rocks to cry out. And I believe that is exactly what is happening concerning this film.

Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, believes there is redemption to be found in this film. “Darren Aronofsky (the director) is not a theologian, nor does he claim to be,” Daly says. “He is a filmmaker and a storyteller, and in Noah, he has told a compelling story. The film expresses biblical themes of good and evil; sin and redemption; justice and mercy. It is a creative interpretation of the scriptural account that allows us to imagine the deep struggles Noah may have wrestled with as he answered God’s call on his life. This cinematic vision of Noah’s story gives Christians a great opportunity to engage our culture with the biblical Noah, and to have conversations with friends and family about matters of eternal significance.”

Listen, I get it. Harry Potter fans wanted the movie to be as close to the book as possible. Historians want movies based on historical characters to be as accurate as possible. Likewise, Christians want the stories of the Bible to be portrayed as closely as possible to how it actually happened. But something gets off balance when we begin hating on a man who needs God. Or maybe we don’t care at all about Mr. Aronofsky and his eternal destiny. Maybe we just care about defending the TRUTH… and we will defend it no matter who we demolish with our words in the process.

Come on, people. God created something out of nothing. I believe He can take this film and bring life from it as well. And while the hateful blogs continue turning readers away from the Lord, this film will surely turn people towards Him.
