Leadership Is Leaning

Have you encountered someone who held a particular office or leadership position where self awareness alluded them? You cannot be around people for any considerable amount of time and not be affected by this type of behavior. It is birthed from an idea that knowledge and language, methods and procedures, are the fundamentals for effective leadership. These things do play a role but it is more likely in the area of developing our system of beliefs. So many people use these as a means to lead effectively. Let me explain.

I love watching Survivor because you get to see how people view leadership. Whenever a position of leadership is assigned, on this show, you often see those who have been selected go straight into barking out orders and setting the method by which such things might be accomplished. The reality is we can talk things to death. I am constantly bringing correction to this behavior to my sons. Just last night I shared with them, “He and the tribe would be better off if he would lead by example and allow those who have placed themselves in his care to just follow. Leadership is not language as much as it is a life that leans into your belief. You can not lead people where you will not go.”

Leaders can often fall into the trap of immobility when language is how they lead. No one wants to be left behind. Start leaning into the direction of your belief and watch people follow. A Jewish philosopher by the name Abraham Joshua Heschel marched with Martin Luther King while he was still alive. In an interview they asked Heschel why. His responded by saying, “I let my feet do the talking.” As leaders we can all benefit from this ideology. What we believe is most powerfully revealed through our walk not our talk.
